Black Water Rafting in Waitomo, NZ

Ever fancy popping along to Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand?
You are! Great. I have two words for you… THE ABYSS.

For those who are a bit more adventurous than your normal glow-worm cave trip then check out The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co.
This is defiantly one of the best trips I did on my travels across the land of the long white cloud.

‘Descend into the seemingly bottomless black depths of the glow-worm studded Ruakuri Cave’. This five-hour expedition combines:

1) Spending the morning getting kitted out, and learning to Absail.

2) Abseiling the 35 metres through a hole and down ( unlike the promo in total darkness)

3)  Whiz down an underground flying fox, jump and plunge into the water to Cave tube, following an impressive sky of glow worms

4) Climb through Cave holes, and later slide down head first into the water.

5) Mind your step as you walk through the caves, often finding deep patches.

6) Play with the eels and spiders!

7) Climb a few cave waterfalls back out to Daylight.

‘At every stage you’re accompanied and supported by experienced caving guides from The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. who know and love this totally unique and mind-blowing environment’

Below is Jed, one our two guides on the flying fox!

Follow the links, and check out what the rest of Waitomo has to offer. There are plenty of other similar trips that from what I hear have had great feedback from fellow backpackers!

Sunny and Soggy Sydney

Well I made it to Sydney twice over my travels. I have come to the conclusion that the city, no doubt has bi-polar weather. It just so happened  whilst I was in Australia, the worst summer they have had in 50 years. Some days I admit it rained, however I also found myself  caught up in a heat wave that scorched up to 37°C.

Arriving from Hong Kong, but back to a western style of living I still experienced some culture changes. The biggest things I picked up on were:

1. You can’t by alcohol in supermarkets. You have to go to a ‘bottle shop’. A lot of these are in fact Drive-Thru boozers. Does that make any sense?

2. Woolworth‘s is a thriving supermarket that sells absolutely everything you need, and not a run down sweets and toy shop.

3. Without any warning at 2 am a nightclub transforms into a Football loving pub. I went to the toilet and returned to the music off, the clubbers gone, and Arsenal v Norwich kicking off. Not only is it strange watching your team scrap a win at 2am, it’s even weirder following a heavy session of Jagerbombs.

4. The cost of living in Sydney is very expensive. For example,  $3.90 (£2.70) for a small bottle of coke, not on my watch sonny boy! On the other hand, buy a bigger bottle and get your name on it!

Places I recommend:

New South Wales Art Gallery

The Rocks, Sydney Harbour Front.(below) A great place to stop for a drink, enjoy the harbour views, explore some unique market stalls and buy a kangaroo bollocks bottle opener.

Wake Up! Hostel near Central Station. – Out of all the hostels I stayed at in Oz. Wake Up was certainly one of the best, cleanest, and spacious. I stayed in a 10 man room and had my own lockers, loads of space and no waiting time for the bathroom. It’s quite pricey, but believe me sometimes it’s not always better to go cheaper in Sydney.

Hyde Park Barracks ( below)

Take an interesting, and quite cheap (with a student/young persons card) tour of the old prisoner barracks restored to its prime. See how the UK’s prisoners lived and were distrubuted into developing Sydney.

Hyde Park – It’s not as big as ours but its just as epic!

Im Finally on My Way!

So it’s currently 5pm in Sydney as I type my first post away on my 2 month adventure.

I flew in from Hong Kong early on Saturday and finally caught some sunshine before the rain has caught up with me!

Lets start from the beginning. The 12 hour flight to China was the longest flight I have ever had. I manged to sleep  well as Qantas changed my seat for me when I arrived at the airport. I had the whole row to myself to rest on..Booyeah!

Hong Kong is quite a weird but awesome place. The Skyscrapers are huuuuuge, its strange to see so much wealth juxtaposed next to Chinese street venders trying to sell me alive crabs.

The transport system they have there is simply so much better than we have in the UK. It’s always on time, very clean and costs around 40p to jump to the next stop or 3 pounds to travel to Lantau Island 25 mins away.

It was funny to see locals panic when they scheduled loading time for the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car up to the Tian Tan Buddha  was delayed by about 2 minutes…

I walked around alot admiring the views. I travelled to Lantau Island to see the Big Buddha, walk along the Buddha Wisdom Trail ( Where I forgot to bring spare  batteries for my camera..Wisdom fail) and see the Po Lin Monastery.

Here are a few pics:

The last thing I did was go up to The Peak…amazing views of the Skyline, Kowloon and behind this shot the massive Ships on the shores. Here is lost my sunglasses which I never actually wore once…bugger!

Hopefully I will be able to upload my Camera photos soon and not just my mobile pics.

In Hong Kong all mushrooms are apparently magic.  You will see an Asian character for simply everything, from mushrooms to Bus timetable space men.

NEXT POST:  Sydney and Auckland. Watch this space!

Explosive Water Projections

Jordan Melo M8 shoe launch

I have been a fan of the latest common trends in ambient advertising that mainly involves the two popular building projection and flash mobs. If you are not familiar with these methods just click the links to see some earlier blogging to give you an idea.

However it can be argued that these methods are over used to death with countless series of successful and cheap campaigns from big clients such as T-Mobile, Samsung, Visit New Zealand and many more around the globe.

Why it was only back in 2010 when T-Mobile won the TV Ad of The Year award with their ( at the time) relatively new flash mob ideas. Now it only seems it would be inevitable that an agency would like to find a new way of performing an ambient piece whilst the craze is  still popular with audiences. After all, once the initial stunt has been performed, social and online media spread the word on the cheap so idiots like me blog about them and do all the hard work for the agency.

I don’t believe the idea of water projections will be as revolutionary as the original flash mob ideas but it is still very cool to watch.

” Coupled with what looks like a fun party on the Hudson River, this is a dramatic way to launch the next evolution of the iconic Jordan shoe.

The weakness of events is that only a few people get to experience them. 18,000+ people have already experienced this event thanks to YouTube and social channels. Nice one.” – Ben Grill, RADvertising.

Animals in the womb.

Sometimes using Stumble is great. Now and again you find something on the net that you simply have to bookmark.  You may have seen these shots back in late December 2009.

However, for those like me living in their own bubble, check out these embryonic animal photographs for a National Geographic documentary entitled “Extraordinary Animals in the Womb”.

The images were conceived using a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and tiny cameras to capture the process from conception to birth.

StoryCorps’ 9/11 animation tributes.

It was obivously a big weekend last week in rememberance of the ten years since 9/11. The tributes swept through the media in all sorts of ways, from the tradtional archive footage to therolling  livenews  updates from lower Manhattan.

However, the tribute that really caught my eye as something quite refreshing, and made the whole event quite human without the constant shocking re-run of footage.

The non-profit organization Storycorps has recorded the personal histories of tens of thousands of Americans, including several personal tributes to loved ones lost in the terrorist attack on 9/11, which were transformed into animated shorts by the Rauch Brothers.

Check out these Videos about three of the victims from The World Trade Center that day.

For me, I did not know anybody who was a victim on 9/11. However, I think these videos do a great job in bringing the audience to feel just a glimpse of what thousands of relatives must of felt by targeting a singular personal tradegy rather than focusing on the event as a whole storyboard with the dramatic explosions, jumpers, last phone calls, collaspes and wide spread panic.

I think it is noteworthy how spine chillingly the footage hits you just as hard as it did 10 years ago. Hopefully we won’t witness anything like that again in our lifetime and beyond.

Nike is Back to the Future of footwear

So what happens when a sports giant decides to team up Hollywood?Thats right! Major movie product placement and obvious merchandise plugging.

But that was the past. This is the future. Behold Nike’s new limited edition 2011 MAG trainer as made famous by, you guessed it Back to The Future. But this time it’s for Charity!

150 of  ’2011 MAG’ trainers are being sold off everyday for 10 days by Nike on eBay, with the money raised by the auctions going straight to The Michael J. Fox Parkinson Research Foundation.

After only re-watching the original Back to The Future by chance this weekend it came as a shock to me by how much Parkinson’s has affected Michael J.Fox, who for obvious reasons in recent years wishes to stay out of the spotlight. Like me, it will come as a massive shock to those who remember his youthful portrayal from the 1980s.

See Michael’s personal message below.

I believe this is a great way in a celebrity obsessed culture to highlight the impact of various diseases, and to raise money for a product that is just simply awesome. An instant hit for any fan of the series.

You can auction for them here.

See the original trainer from Back to The Future 2,  in action below.

Flashmob Kicks Off The Rugby World Cup 2011

In preparation for my travels to New Zealand and Australia this November I have kept a keen eye out for any news, advice or info surrounding my upcoming adventures.

I have particularly been looking forward to The Rugby World Cup that kicks off in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland, on the 9th September.

Not only because I love a good ole game of Rugby, but I am hoping that the coverage will really showcase New Zealand’s picturesque landscape, and give me a small taster of video insight to the country I am about to explore.

Alongside the traditional above the line campaign you would usually find with an approaching World Cup I really like how the Kiwis have promoted the competition by virally spreading spontaneous public performances of the famous Haka performed by the All Blacks before kick off.

Malcolm Mulholland, a rugby historian, says the haka are a great example of traditional Māori culture meeting modern technology.

“They are organised by Māori, exhibit Māori culture, are being done in a modern way and get crowds to stop what they’re doing and appreciate an aspect of Māori culture,” he says.

To add a twist to the tail, the flash mob group performing the haka have been mostly performing around their bitter rivals’ turf across Australia, bring traffic and shopping centres to a standstill.

This is a confident showcase from New Zealand, who once again find themselves favourites to win the Webb Ellis Cup despite not actually winning the trophy since the tournament was last held in their own backyard in 1987.

In Conclusion… C’mon England, stuff the lot of them!
