Cubify 3D Printer

Las Vegas is this year’s home to the Consumer Electronics show (CES). Currently in its third day, many companies are unveiling exciting new products, gadgets and gizmos.

The one that gets me most excited? The Cubify 3D printer.

If it hadn’t just been Christmas I would be putting this right at the top of my wish list to Santa!

I should build a house of cards more often

Clearing out my phone of all it’s old photo’s and wanted to share this particularly awesome selection from an immense night building a huge house of cards in The Cabbage Patch, one of many rugby pubs in Twickenham.

After a long shift working thinking about building a massive house of cards, my boss and I got to work on it and after about 14 attempts (and many hours!) we finally succeeded in reaching the ceiling. I remember thinking it could make a neat Guinness Advert – us two patiently assembling a bunch of Guinness beer mats into a tonk house of cards.

Those were the days, if only my current work revolved around planning and executing the perfect house of cards.

Take one photo every day of your life

I thought about doing this a four years ago when I started university doing a photography degree but then freshers week kicked in and I forgot all about it. I had it planned in my head that if I took a photo of myself every day throughout my whole course, starting from my very first day on campus and finishing on the day I finish, I could submit a photo diary of my university education. I liked the thought that I could make it into a flick book and each photograph would be completely different, you’d even see my hair growing and my body getting fatter as I drink more and more alcohol.

Since then there’s been projects similar to my idea such as Three Sixty Five and when telling a photographer I know about it he told me about this dude that did it until the day he died. The photo below was taken by that guy on the day I was born over 23 years ago! It’s just one of thousands he took throughout his life before dying at 41. Awesome eh?

I changed from a photography course to do advertising and left photography as a hobby. Gutted that I didn’t get up off my arse and do the project now though. Thanks to Big Crusty Ape for the link.

More staples art by Baptiste Debombourg

A little while ago I blogged about Peter Root’s cityscape staple art after seeing it on Fubiz. Now, after exploring more of the Fubiz archives I’ve fond some more staples art that I think I might enjoy even more.

It took the French artist, Baptiste Debombourg, 75 hours and 35,000 staples to create the pieces and you can see loads more of his awesome installations on his website.

I can imagine using this technique to make a nice TV, Print or Guerilla campaign for a stationary brand or chain like Rymans (or Staples of course!). I can see a stop motion TV spot with quirky music and an artwork or logo being created with staples in this technique.

Skateboarding rocks!

FUCK FUCK FUCK!!! I just wrote a whole god damned blog post about these stupid fucking skate decks and didn’t arsing press save! Fucking hell I’m an idiot. So here’s a shortened version (because I can’t be bothered with writing out the whole bloody thing again) of what I wrote before…

The other day I found these old boards in my house from when I used to skate about 5 years ago (do you like my spotty socks?). I remember wanting to keep them because I was going to paint them all up good and turn them into book shelves to fix onto the wall.

I never actually got round to doing that and as these one’s are so chipped, worn and scratched I probably never will. I might do it in the future with nice new decks and do them properly to go in a nice house. Also, I might put my trucks onto that Element board as it’s still in pretty good condition and I want to get back into skating because I miss it and because I want to keep fit.

I just had a look around for some ideas for skateboard designs and found these awesome ones by Space Invader, an awesome tile street artist. I was recently reminded about Space Invaders awesomeness when I went to see Banksy’s film ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ at a secret screening in a tunnel underneath Waterloo Station.

Anyway, so what you’ve learned from this blog post is three things…

- Space Invader is awesome

- I’m going to get RAD at skating again

- I have spotty socks

There, well done. You can get back to whatever it was you were doing before, but happier than when you were doing it before.

My ideas for improving Yelp

Since meeting a few guys and girls from Yelp recently I’ve become a (slightly addicted) Yelp user and enjoy writing reviews a few times per week. As a result I’ve begun to notice some areas for improvement and thought I’d start a blog post to list my ideas to see if any other Yelp users agree?

Filtering

- When browsing in map view I want to be able to filter the results by checking/unchecking boxes to show places with/without my specific interests such as cuisine type, price range, outdoor seating, WiFi, etc. They have a system like this at the moment but it doesn’t allow you to uncheck or filter out something you know you’re not interested in. This would make browsing easier.

WiFi

- Yelp should include an option to give a star rating of the WiFi for a cafe/bar/restaurant etc because the quality of WiFi at each place varies so much. WiFi sometimes comes up in the ‘Show more survey questions’ but it should also be one of the check boxes that always comes up.

Rating System

- When you write a review you get the option to answer a set of survey questions about what services the establishment offers (e.g. Takeaway? Delivery? Smoking Area?). This is good but without reading through all the reviews it doesn’t tell us about the quality of services. For example I’d like to see a star rating system for things such as quality of food, quality of drinks, quality of atmosphere,  good/bad music, speed of delivery, sheltered smoking area, quality of WiFi, etc

Writing more than one review per place

Sometimes I’ll check out a club or sandwich shop or wherever and I’ll come away feeling really happy, knowing I’ll go back at some point. But then when I go back it’s awful. I don’t know why this is, perhaps I was served by someone else or I just go unlucky.

Also, I’ve been to a bar before to have lunch and thought it was amazing with great service and good food but then when I’ve been in the evening for drinks it’s been slow service and poor quality.

Yelp should let you write multiple reviews for occasions like this because at the moment you can only update your previous review. This would give readers a better idea as to the consistency of a place, what it’s good (and not good) for and it would show how many times particular Yelpers go to that place (it must be good if they go a lot). For example, Tossed is unpredictable but Gaucho is consistently amazing and readers could see that I go there a lot.

Blog Synchronising

I think it’d be great if your Yelp reviews synchronised with your blog. So when I write a review on Yelp it gives me an option to publish the review to my blog also, just like it does now with Twitter and Facebook.

This would encourage people to put more effort into writing a good quality review, rather than just posting quickly without thought or care. It would also spread the word of Yelp further as each synchronised blog post could come with a link to the Yelp review, thus diverting more traffic to Yelp.

Embedding photographs and links

In the same way that I write a blog post with embedded photographs and links it would we good to be able to do this with Yelp too. Then you can use the photographs to help explain what you’re talking about and they’d help break up the text, making large reviews easier to digest. These embedded images could be pulled automatically from within the reviews and put in the photos section for each business.

If you have any to add, feel free to do so in the comments or mail them to me and I’ll add them in. Once there’s a decent amount I’ll send them to Yelp via their Feedback page.

There, that’s it for now. It’s not a rant at Yelp, because they’ve got great usability already, it’s just some idea of how it could be improved further. Apologies if I’ve said something that they already do, let me know if I have!

3D. Like. No. Other.

A pretty neat installation in a gallery in Australia using bouncy balls.

This would have made a cool stunt for Sony Bravia TVs back when their Bouncy Balls ad came out. They could have erected a huge Sony Bravia TV with suspended bouncy balls (as above) and viewing members of the public could have stepped inside and walked around the suspended, pixel-like bouncy balls. In fact, they should do it if they bring out 3D TVs with some copy that’s reminiscent of their pre-existing campaign…

‘3D. Like No Other’

They could even re-shoot the bouncy balls ad using 3D cameras and air it on telly and cinema after dishing out Sony branded 3D glasses.

There you go, Fallon, this one’s on me. The next you’ll have to pay for. And don’t forget to credit me, yeah.

Who really uses phone boxes?

I can’t remember who brought this thought to my attention but ever since they did I’ve been wondering if anyone actually uses telephone boxes anymore. Do you?

I’m sure you don’t because you probably have a mobile phone, like me, and everyone else that can speak. Well anyway, after much thought and a little inspiration I’ve found the solution…

Hooker Cubicles

Yes, that’s right, Hooker Cubicles. After walking past this defaced phone box advert I had a light bulb moment and I think I’ve cracked it. That bright light you see in the photograph is my light bulb moment.

It works like this…

Telephone boxes (such as the one above) adopt price lists (such as the one above) and red lights in the ceiling. A prostitute can then rent the booth to tout business (or ‘clients’ as they probably don’t call them) and use the phone for whatever it is that they use telephones for. They’re usually plastered with prossy cards anyway so it seems to fit.

There you go. That’s it. My idea for what to do with phone booths. If you don’t like it, suggest something better.

Oh yeah. Brand me like that.

I wrote a blog post titled ‘Brand me baby. BRAND ME!‘ last week about how I intend to brand myself for networking purposes. In brief I talked about how I’ve done it before and how I’m in the process of doing it now.

I’ve just had business cards printed from a design I created myself on photoshop. In order to make me recognisable to industry figures and potential employers I have synchronised my Twitter profile, business card and CV. By doing this I hope that when I give someone my business card they might just say “I know you, we’re following each other on Twitter” and so on.

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll by synchronising my Facebook profile and this blog too.

My girlfriend hadn’t read my previous post, nor had I told her about how I was branding myself, but by coincidence she’s been doing it too! Last night she went to a PR networking event in Canary Wharf where she met a PR top dog. she gave him her business card and he instantly recognised her from Twitter! Fantastic. That is exactly what I am branding myself for and she is a great example of how it works perfectly. She will probably write a better blog post about how she did it within the next week so check out her blog called ‘The Intern

If you’re thinking about making a business card make sure you have continuity between all ‘media’ you use.

Good idea? Done it before? Does it work? Does it not work? Comments…

Brand me baby. BRAND ME!

First off, apologies for the lack of blog posts recently. I went to Southampton for my graduation ceremony and ball. It was an incredible weekend but far too messy to put on my bloggy blog, see my facebook if you dare.

Ok, here goes…

At uni I had lots of lectures on the importance of branding a product or service to give it a personality, voice and identity. So my creative partner and I thought about this for a while and then asked ourselves, can you brand a person?

After much thought the answer seemed obvious, that yes, you can brand yourself or others. Celebs use their manager or a PR agency to help brand themselves and products use a mix of advertising, marketing and PR to do it. So surely we could do it for ourselves.

So my partner, Dan (Hooper), and I set about branding ourselves. We lived next to each other and had the same lectures each day so walked into uni together everyday. We also carried a portfolio and sketch books under our arms, pretty much wherever we went, even if we didn’t need them that day. Very quickly people began mocking us for always being together and after a while the mocking subsided to allow for their appreciation that we were working hard together.

Many could finally see that we were creatives.

But the branding didn’t stop there. My surname is Harvey and my partners is Hooper so we began referring to each other by our last names, instead of our first names. Soon, others began doing the same. We created a ‘Hooper & Harvey’ logo to go on our portfolio, website and business cards (all with the same images and typography). We started an advertising themed radio show on the university radio station and begun to engage with other media students and industry professionals.

All this combined led to us becoming well known in university as ‘Hooper & Harvey’ and if we were ever alone people would ask where the other half of the team was. This was important in establishing ourselves as a successful and recognisable team, despite only our lecturers seeing our actual portfolio.

So today I received my new business card which I designed on photoshop last week. Watch this space because in the next week or so I will brand this very blog, my twitter profile and my facebook profile. When someone see’s my blog I want them to think ‘Oh this is the same guy I’ve been following on Twitter’ etc etc

What do you think? Any good? Piece of shit?
