Slush Puppies on the street in Panama City

Whilst sweating like donkeys in Panama City recently we stumbled across this fella making home-made Slush Puppies from block ice, some sort of make shift plain (not sure on the spelling here, I mean one of those things that a carpenter uses) and a shot load of sugary coloured water and condensed milk.

As for the flavour, it tasted very similar to a toffee apple except more sickly if that’s even possible. Here’s what it looks like to sit on a wall drinking one with the Panama Canal in the background…

THE most amazing steak at The Warehouse, Los Angeles

If you’re in LA and you fancy an incredible steak with a decent view (something that can be quite hard to find in LA, seeing as most restaurants are at the roadside for ease of getting to) then you should DEFINITELY try to check out The Warehouse in Marina Del Rey.

Plastered all over the walls are hundreds of photographs of various celebrities dining in the restaurant with Burt Hixon, the fella that opened The Warehouse way back when.

Along with a whole load of oldies that Yaz and I didn’t recognise, were some behind the scenes shots of the Meet The Fockers cast who filmed a scene in this restaurant in 2004.

As well as Adam Sandler, who for some reason I keep coming across wherever I go (like when we cruised Hollywood the other day, see below).

Check out the gorgeous steak I had with some truly bloody fantastic sweet potato fries…

Get some killer shrimp at Killer Shrimp in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles

Killer Shrimp on Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles serves pretty much what you could expect from the name. Shrimp. And bloody good shrimp at that, with a whole range of different types and flavours. Yaz got the popcorn shrimp, a better and tastier version of popcorn chicken from KFC and I got ‘The Orginal’ which was some sort of shrimp in a bath of spicy goodness with perfect french fries and french bread for dipping.

If the sound of the food isn’t enough to tempt you to visit, then the view across Marina Del Rey and their wicked-awesome logo which I reckon would make a sweet-ass tattoo.

Burgerac is a burger detective hot on the trail of the finest burger in London

We all love a good burger from time to time (well, not you vegetarians, but I’m not talking to you) and “wow, that was the best burger ever” must have been said by each of us at one point or another.

But was is REALLY the best burger ever? EVER? What have you compared it to? Can you be sure it was really THAT amazing? To help you score your burger and compare it fairly against others, I would recommend consulting a cannibalistic expert on the topic: Burgerac.

Burgerac is, in his own words, a burger detective hot on the trail of the finest burger in town. Someone out there is capable of committing the perfect burger and it is Burgerac’s oh-so-noble mission to find and relish it!

And what inspired publishing this post? The publication of the photograph below on Facebook by a friend of mine. Could this be the holy grail that Burgerac has been looking for?

What is this burger and where can I find it, I hear you ask? It’s The Elvis Burger, from The Dog House in Guernsey and contains 1 X bun, 2 X chicken breasts, 1 X beef burger, a few onion rings, 1 X bacon, 1 X cheese, 1 X tomato, some onions, 1 X mushroom, 1 X egg and some salad (you’ve gotta have 1 of your five-a-day, right?) along with a giganta-portion of fries.

I’d like to think that these guys were man enough to ditch the knives and forks and got stuck in with their hands.

UPDATE: Since publishing this post this morning, I have been alerted to the 1KG BURGER from the Flaming Grill Pubs chain. My friend Adam finished his, obviously, but his brother (pictured below) did not – he must be feeling pretty emasculated right now.

Its got 2x 12oz burgers, 2x chicken breasts, chill con carne, cheese, bacon and onion rings with a double portion of fries! The best bit is that they’re running a competition for people to eat it all in under 15 minutes…

Omid Djalili at the Bearcat Comedy Club

So, a couple of weeks ago I tweeted about the awesome performance of Omid Djalili at the Bearcat Comedy club round the corner from me in Twickenham. By coincidence, Omid saw it, was flattered and then tweeter back to say that he’d come back for another gig before starting his next tour…

Before Omid Djalili came on was some great support acts, including Lucy Porter (VERY funny, and now one of my favourite female comedians of all time – sorry Shappi Khorsandi) and Philberto (a quick whitted character comedian who you should avoid heckling if you want to keep your integrity intact) pictured below with a rather embarrassed heckler, Conrad, in the foreground on the right.

Also, check out Julian Deane if you’re into that awkward-slash-not-sure-if-you-should-laugh-or-cry kind of humour which I, personally, found fucking hilarious.

All in all, I’d strongly recommend the Bearcat Comedy club for some truly outstanding comedians – both well known and not so well known – at a great price. This weekend, see Gordon Shouthern, Debra Jane-Appleby, Ian Moore and Ian Incognito amongst others for only about a tenner and grab some decent food from The Turks Head next door too.

Big thanks to the compare and Bearcat Comedy Club organiser, James (the tall fella pictured above), who offered us complimentary tickets and introduced us to the lovely Omid Djalili after the gig. Also, happy birthday to MY DAD (on the right) who was 100 last week.

Review of the Small Batch Coffee Company in Brighton

After a long weekend drinking far too much money I’ve found myself today in Brighton with work in London started in less than 2 hours. Needless to say, I’m pretty god damn knackered so I decided to treat myself to a caffeinated treat en route to the train station. And it’s one of the best I’ve tasted in a long time.

Small Batch Coffee Company is a trailer cart style thing-a-ma-jiggy just outside Brighton station which appears to attract a great number of regulars each morning. The barista knew the orders of the 4 people in front of me in the queue and 2 of them tipped the coffee makers before even tasting their beverage.

Anyway, so I ordered my drink of choice and, upon tasting it, I am incredibly impressed. Perhaps it’s the sheer exhaustion that makes me think it’s so amazing but either way, I urge you to try it over any of the highstreet shops such as Starbucks, Nero, Pret or Costa next time you’re in Brighton.

The Small Batch Coffee Company is part of the Drop 4 Drop scheme which effectively sees 10 litres of clean water provided to the people that need it most for every litre of water used in producing coffee. Awesome stuff.

4 star review of The Chilli Pickle in Brighton

After initially being turned away because they were fully booked, we were invited back to wine and dine at Chilli Pickle in Brighton’s South Lanes – and god damn was it worth returning to!

At first I was put off by there being not one single Indian member of staff but once the food arrived and we started shovelling it into our faces, everything was good again.

What you can see there in the picture is their £16.50 platter including 4 different types of succulent and juicy spiced meats laid simply on naan with 3 colourful dips of varying flavour.

The vibrant pink thing you see there is a really great beetroot yoghurt thing which helped take the whole dish to a whole new level of ‘awww yeeeaah’.

Possibly the best Nando’s restaurant in London

Recently visited Nando’s in the London Bridge area to celebrate a friend’s birthday. From the outside it looked pretty grand set into the arches of a railway bridge and once you walk inside it’s magnificence is multiplied!

Along with cool things like a plant pot taller than a human being, there’s 10 metre high walls plastered in some really great art works – the only problem being that you can’t examine each one closely.

In addition to the massively high ceilings, arty farty walls and nice atmosphere, they’ve also got a selection of booths at the waters edge overlooking the river Thames. I would so love this place to be a more interesting restaurant than Nando’s because of it’s unique location and nice style, but having said that, Nando’s is one of my preferred food chains and I’ll be sure to return.

REAL Paul Young hot chocolate from Yuforia

Last week I got word that Leo from Yuforia, the local frozen yoghurt place, had been going to meetings with the famous chocolatier, Paul A Young. After probing Yuforia on Twitter we found that they’ve just started selling Paul Young REAL hot chocolate.

It’s made with finely ground dark chocolate and hot water, no milk. Now I’m a litle snobby about my hot chocolate so when I heard that there’s no milk, I was skeptical. However, after tasting it, you can appreciate that this is the real way to do it.

Plus, to add a little extra fuck yeah to the whole experience, there’s some awesome toppings to chuck on top including chili, nutmeg, cinnamon, marshmallows and more coming soon.

Great street art from Ben Eine in Graphic Bar, Golden Square.

I came here one day last week to get out of the office and have something quick to eat and was delighted to see that it’s been refurbished from it’s previously dark looking state.

The first thing you notice is the massive garage door style alcoves plastered with street art from Ben Eine (the artist who did that piece which David Cameron gave to Barack Obama). As well as the alcoves, there’s some other artwork on the walls and the friendly waitress said that there’s some more pieces coming soon.

You’re looking at around £10 – £12 for a main meal, which isn’t terribly cheap, but you’re effectively situated in the middle of an awesome street art gallery. I learned also that they re-design the whole bar with a different artist every 6 months. Very cool, I’ll be back here.
